When I’m not planning my next trip or exploring what the world has to offer, I love going on days out and long weekends here in the UK. Not only is it cheaper than flying somewhere else, but going on a short weekend break in your own country can be just as exciting as heading somewhere abroad.
Plus, with gorgeous green countryside, scenic lakes, and amazing country pubs to tuck into delicious hearty meals, there’s something wonderful and charming about a quintessentially British getaway. With this in mind, here are some of the best destinations for you to choose from on your next UK getaway!
I visited Warwick and Stratford-upon-Avon for a short weekend break back in 2014, and I’ve wanted to go back ever since. Warwick is probably one of my favourite places in the UK and it’s the perfect destination for a weekend getaway, regardless of what you’re looking for. Warwickshire has so much to offer, so whether you’re into history, literature, or you just want to relax, there’s something for everyone.
If you’re here, don’t miss Warwick Castle (by far my favourite castles in England, apart from Hampton Court Palace) and all the Shakespearean museums in Stratford. Warwick itself is lovely too, so make sure to go for a stroll in the old town!
Situated in the heart of East Anglia, Cambridge is a place that needs no introduction. Whether you live in the UK or you’re visiting from abroad, Cambridge is one of those places everyone has probably heard of, and automatically thinks of its world-famous university.
But there’s more to this historical city than its university – Cambridge is known for its green spaces, so you won’t have to go far to find a place to sit back, relax and enjoy the sunshine on a warm summer’s day. If you’re looking for something else, try punting on the River Cam, or visit one of Cambridge’s many museums and churches. Or, if you fancy a walk in the countryside, Grantchester Village and Wandlebury Country Park are not too far away from the city centre.
The Lake District
With breathtaking lakes and spectacular views on your doorstep, the Lake District is another great spot for a weekend trip. Have a look at Great Little Breaks to discover a range of fantastic luxury getaways with some incredible hotels, and enjoy a weekend full of activities and adventures from cycling and hiking to sailing along Lake Windermere.
If you want to add a little bit of culture to your trip, make sure to visit Grasmere too, home of the Romantic poet William Wordsworth and his wife Dorothy. You can even visit some of the spots where he found inspiration to write some of the world’s most beautiful and famous poems.
North Yorkshire has some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK, and with lots of cosy villages and towns to explore, it makes for the perfect place to head to for a couple of days. Spend your days out rambling in the countryside before heading back to enjoy a delicious lunch in a traditional British pub, with a roaring log fire keeping the whole room toasty. From spa towns like Harrogate to the city of York, there’s so much to choose from, whatever type of getaway you’re looking for.
If you’d prefer to stay near the sea, visiting one of the UK’s coasts can make for an exciting weekend away as well. The perfect mix of luxury accommodation, great views and plenty to do, Britain has some fantastic coastal resorts across the country.
If you want to be in Yorkshire, head to Scarborough for a picturesque seaside town with great walks and a nice beach to enjoy. If you’d prefer to stay in the South, why not head to Devon to enjoy the gorgeous scenery at Saunton Sands? If you’re there in the summer months, you’ll even be able to catch a glimpse of some impressive surfing.
