What’s the hardest/most challenging book you’ve ever read? Was it worth the effort? Did you read it by choice or was it an assignment/obligation?
The most challenging book I’ve ever read has to be The Sound and the Fury. I already mentioned it in a previous post – it was an assignment for my American Literature class last year so I had to read it but I didn’t manage to connect with the story at all. So much so that I gave it up after about 50 pages. (which I almost never do)
The most challenging book I actually did finish was The Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. I had to read it for Brit Lit class two years ago, but it was a complete nightmare. I thought I’d never finish it!
How about you? Feel free to leave a comment with your BTT below.

That's my biggest challenge. 🙂
I'm in complete agreement — seems the books I struggled with most were those assigned to me in school. Why can't we read fun and interesting books instead? 😀
Thanks for visiting earlier.
The most challenging I finished i think was Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow…Great book, but challenging…Most challenging I didn't finish yet, probably Snow by Orhan Pamuk…Brilliant, but for some reason I always get bored reading Pamuk.

I haven't read The Sound and The Fury, but I have heard of it. I agree with Trev's statement though … I hate it when there's that one author where you're bored with immediately. Mine is definitely Gabriel Garcia Marquez … after reading One Hundred Years of Solitude, I'm scared to read anything else!

I haven't read The Sound and the Fury, although Heart of Darkness is on my to-be-read pile. It's now moving a bit further down lol!
My BTT is here if you'd like a look 🙂
I have a theory that schools seek to find books that drive us nuts instead of ones that encourage us to WANT to read more. I'm not even sure my teachers wanted to read all the books on our lists.
Here's my BTT – House Millar series

I found Lolita really hard to read. I had to constantly stop and look at a dictionary, but after a few chapters I just kept reading and didn't bother looking up the 'big' words anymore. This book actually shamed me because I had always been proud of my vocabulary range! So much for that!
Yet another classic that I have not gotten to yet. Someday!
